I guess I should start by explaining the blog title. The "Straight Up" is a nod to Paula Abdul's song of the same name, while it's also a reference to my hair, which as you can tell from this picture, is straight! I have naturally curly hair, but I decided to do something different a few weeks ago when I finally worked up the courage to get it cut and highlighted. The stylist asked me if I'd ever flat-ironed my hair before, and I said I hadn't. So she decided to surprise me, and I walked away with an entirely new look. I've been enjoying it quite a lot.
The second part of the title is a lyric from that same song, but with a twist. Abdul's original lyric says, "Lost in a dream." However, for the past week or so, my husband has been stuck in a nightmare. He's an inventory control supervisor at Borders, and the company's bankruptcy has ended in a liquidation, which means that he'll soon be out of a job. This means a lot of uncertainty for us, and we're trying to stay positive. It also means that we're scaling way back, so you will probably start to see even more posts about creative ways to be thrifty (hey, the pants I'm wearing in this photo are over four years old, and the shirt was purchased on sale AND with a gift card, and the shoes were purchased from a fellow blogger for a very reasonable $25).

I'm so sorry to hear about your husband's employment situation. Stay positive! And if anyone can be stylish and chic on a budget, I believe it is you!
I love your straight hair. I have curly hair, too, and every once in a while straighten it out. It can be a chore, but it's fun to do something different. I really like the bit of wave you still have going on!
Hey Sara, I love that outfit and your hair looks fantastic. I'm so sorry to hear about Shawn's job and the uncertainty it is a tough situation.
Aw, best of luck to you and your spouse. I know when my husband was laid off last year (the day before Christmas Eve, natch) it was a bit of a shock, even though we had seen the signs of impending layoff coming our way.
To suddenly be the sole breadwinner was very scary.
We economized ahead of the layoff and of course even more after. My husband is now working his own business and it's still scary, as he is an architect and neither businesses, government, or regular folks are doing a lot of building or improvements these days in Arizona. I work in defense and with all the budget cuts and increased government oversight of every little thing defense contractors do my time is starting to look very short-lived as well.
But enough about me---we are holding our ground and constantly hoping for the best for everyone so we can all recover. I'll be sending good vibes your way, no doubt about it.
i'm sorry about your husband, sara! mine lost his job in fall '09 and started a business (scary stuff). i stay at home, so our income is never certain. it's why i started following blogs like yours, though and thrifting. i know you guys will make it work ...
